How can Kundalini Yoga assist you on a Recovery Path?

* Kundalini Yoga is about repairing, rebalancing, and renewing, mind, body, and spirit

* If you have never heard of Kundalini Yoga the first thing to do is release any thoughts you have regarding what you think yoga is

Instead of going on and on about Kundalini Yoga’s benefits for someone on a path of recovery, I am providing the following list which breaks down exactly how the tools of Kundalini Yoga work on releasing toxins and core issues, rebuilding the nervous system, rebalancing the chakras, emotions, and brain chemistry, and creating an overall new sense of being and love for your life. No matter what type of recovery path you are on Kundalini Yoga is a valuable resource to have in your toolbox.

Nervous system

Balances the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervaus systems-Yoga works on increasing the parasympathetic response. Strengthens the 72,000 nerves to allow one to build the grit to live life and face everyday situations and challenges and not want to reach for or do something to cope and escape.

Endocrine System (Glands)

Working on the chakra system through the stimulation of the Kundalini energy positively affects the health and balance of the glands, which creates a sense of emotional well being and a connection to all of life. Angles created in postures place pressure on specific glands assisting them in secreting into the blood stream and balancing the hormones.

Chakra System

The Chakras affect our perceptions, feelings, and choices. They affect the types of thoughts we have and the energies we gather to act upon them. They affect the relationship between the conscious and unconscious. We bring the Kundalini energy up and allow it to flow through the chakras to bring about a change in consciousness and a transformation in the character of the individual. Kundalini Yoga works on balancing the energies of the first 3 chakras to assist students with healing digestive issues, releasing fears, emotional imbalances, channeling creative energy and balancing sexual energies.

Pranayama

Assists with strengthening the pranic body and building core energy. Increases oxygen within our body increasing our mental clarity and focus. When an addictive urge arises increasing our oxygen intake up to 21% or more can assist in moving through the urge. When the pranic body is weak the impulse to reach for outside stimulants to give one a boost increases. Many breathing techniques can assist with calming, anxiety attacks, hyper-tension, stress, and change the way one feels.

Meditation

Kundalini Yoga has 1000's of meditations to assist students with anything from conquering self-animosity to scientifically tested and applied meditations for addictions. It assists one in maintaining focus and allowing painful thoughts to arise from the subconscious and be released turning commotion to devotion, meditation promotes a sense of well -being, inner peace, and calm.

Mantra

Formulas that alter the patterns of the mind and work on stimulating the hypothalamus to change the chemistry of the brain. Chanting brings intuition, inner strength, and the flow of thoughts become aligned with the higher self. The ego relaxes and one can then become truly silent. A conscious method of controlling and directing, the mind by invoking the positive power contained in particular sacred syllables. Many Kundalini Yoga meditations use mantra.

Asanas with Movement

Posture stimulate body areas and the movement and/or mantra connected assists in releasing ones emotional masking and blocks. Movement also assists in releasing toxins from the various organs, muscles, and tissues. Postures allow one to build a deeper awareness of the body and all the different areas one may not be conscious of. Postures allow one to become more conscious of self and through holding and merging, with the posture you eventually become a conscious self.

Seva

(Selfless Service) Reaching out and helping someone or organization without any expectations or need for recognition.

"Surrender"

*A note about Mantra and the hypothalamus: The hypothalamus is located in the brain below the thalamus and is connected by blood vessles to the pituatary gland, the master gland of the body. Its job is to regulate vital functions such as hunger, thirst, body temperature, and sleep. It also triggers regulation of moods, emotional balance, and sexuality. When chanting mantra (sound vibration) the hypothalamus receives the impulses from the patterns of the sound and in turn translates the impulses into instructions that regulate chemical messengers to all vital areas of the brain and body. Think of your tongue as your fingers and the roof of your mouth as a keyboard and the hypothalamus as the computer. Each time your tongue hits one of the 8+ meridian points on the hard and soft palate of your mouth it is like typing in an instruction and your hypothalamus receives the message and carries it out.
